Enrichment
The wide-ranging Enrichment program at St Philip Howard is an essential part of school life, designed to allow every student to discover new talents and to broaden their interests.
Enrichment at SPH
St Philip Howard want to test and challenge children in unexpected ways; to help them to develop creativity and resilience.
We aim to help young people learn about commitment, teamwork, to overcome difficulties and to manage themselves and their feelings. In order to develop these personal qualities and skills, there are many opportunities beyond the classroom in sport, music, performance, clubs and societies, which allow students to take responsibility, lead and volunteer.
We are sure you will enjoy looking through the enrichment opportunities available to you, and are confident these will allow you to develop and excel as the excellent individual you are.
Due to the current circumstances, we may need to utilise and adapt the enrichment program. Therefore, the current timetable is not a true reflection on what is usually available to our students.

Duke of Edinburgh
SPH offers all three levels of D of E programme which, when you”ve successfully completed them, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. They vary in the minimum length of time it takes to complete them, how challenging they are and the minimum age at which you can commence.
Depending on your age, you are free to start at any level but most people prefer to try for Bronze and work upwards. There are age restrictions for each one so it makes sense to build up to the difficult parts rather than dive in at the deep end!
Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Bronze Award
At SPH we start Bronze D of E in Year 10 and in the current year we have 60 young people undertaking this award
A Bronze D of E programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. You must do a minimum of 3 months activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, and plan, train for and complete a 2 day (1 night) Expedition.
You also spend an extra three months on one of the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. It is your choice which one and, though you can change your mind later, you should decide which section you want to do for longer at the beginning. Knowing how long you are going to do it for will help you to choose your activity and set your goals for each section.
It will usually take you at least 6 months to complete your Bronze programme.

Silver Award
SPH currently has 32 pupils going through the Silver award in the current academic year.
You need to be at least 15 to start your Silver Award and we will complete this in the Autumn of Year 11, so that we avoid the vital GCSE period. As this is a restricted time period we normally take only participants who have already completed their Bronze expedition.
A Silver D of E programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. You need to do at least 6 months Volunteering and a minimum of 6 months on either Physical or Skills and 3 months on the other. It is up to you which one you do for longer.
The Expedition section involves planning, training for and a 3 day (2 night) expedition.
It will take you at least 6 months for Silver if you have already achieved your Bronze.

Gold Award
We had four ex–SPH pupils go to St James´ Palace this year to celebrate their achievement with others from all over the country with members of the Royal family and celebrity award presenters. The current Gold Group consists of 13 pupils
Once you are 16 you can do your Gold D of E programme. No activities can be counted for this before your 16th birthday. We normally offer Gold to Year 12 students.
You will spend 12 months on your Volunteering section. For Physical and Skills you must spend 12 months on one and six months on the other – you decide which way around to do it.
Your expeditions will be for four days and three nights and should take place in ´wild country´. We have traditionally used the Brecon Beacons and the Lake District.
The big difference at Gold is you´ll also do a Residential section – staying away from home for five days and four nights doing a shared activity with people you don´t know. It is great fun and a real chance to do something different!
If you have jumped straight into your Gold D of E programme you will need to do a further six months either volunteering or whichever one of your physical or skills activities you spent the most time on.
For Gold, you will need to do your programme for at least 12 months if you have achieved your Silver Award, or 18 months if you have started at Gold level without doing your Silver – even if you have done Bronze.
