Online Safety

Online Safety Latest
The list of new websites and apps which are attractive to young people seems limitless! Just as you get to know the latest craze, it´s already yesterday´s news.

The following sites and apps are causing some concern around West Sussex schools:
• Pickle – sign up for paid small jobs and tasks for unknown users
• Sayat.me – meant for business use but gives the opportunity to collect information anonymously, so could be used for bullying
• Blue Whale – a site which appears to encourage dangerous dares and risk taking
• Yellow – a dating site for teens which could put users at risk of grooming by adults

The best advice we can give is to keep talking to your children about their online activities. Show an interest in any apps or websites they are using and discuss whether there are any potential risks. If you come across any apps or websites you are worried about, let us know and get in touch with CEOP where you can find guidance and report an incident: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/

Be safe online! If you want to learn more about keeping your child safe online, this web site provides some useful information: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents
Other useful sites include www.net-aware.org.uk, which is a guide to social networks that students might use, and parentinfo.org contains some expert advice about keeping safe online.

A new games craze has arrived in the UK. Pokemon Go is proving to be very attractive to gamers. For guidance about the game and the possible risks, please read this article from the UK Internet Safety Centre: www.saferinternet.org.uk/news/pokemon-go-gaming-gone-mobile

The UK Internet Safety Centre has issued the following guidelines for parents and carers to help you to keep your child safe whilst enjoying their present and to avoid expenses you hadn´t planned for!

Online gaming is becoming an increasing safety risk for teenagers. It seems that even the popular "Minecraft" has been affected by inappropriate popup advertisements.
Does your child play online against other players who are unknown to them personally? Please read this recently published article about a tragic event: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/jan/23/breck-bednar-murder-online-grooming-gaming-lorin-lafave or watch BBC3 DramaDocumentary "Murder Games".
As with social media, the advice is never to add "friends" or communicate with anyone you do not know in person!

Within the school, the following staff members are responsible for safeguarding and E-safety.

Alison Baker - ESafety Officer
Ann Careless - Safeguarding Manager
Mary Craig - Governor

We have a new Safer Schools Partnership Officer (Sussex Police) working with the school on Wednesdays 11.30am – 2.30pm. Our officer is PCSO Justina Baker.

Should you wish to contact Justina with any concerns she can be reached as follows. Please mention the school"s name as she deals with other schools in the area.
