"Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist" – Rene Magritte"

Studying art offers students a vital opportunity to explore their own creativity, express ideas and develop an understanding of visual principles in our increasingly image-filled world. At St Philip Howard we encourage innovation and the will to experiment, celebrating the creativity and imagination of our pupils at all levels. The annual art exhibition, which showcases the work of GCSE and A Level students, continues to bring us new delights each year as our students undertake increasingly ambitious and risk-taking works; painting outside in all weathers, cementing broken plates to their canvases, or even dragging the odd car bonnet into school from the local car yard to use in their work.

Staff in the department are often practising artists as well as being qualified teachers, and are able to help students to develop their technical skills in a range of media and disciplines from traditional oil-paints to digital media. Art club every Thursday after school is well-attended by students from all years who work together in a lively, friendly atmosphere shared by those who have a special interest in the subject. Visits to local galleries as well as the major collections in London also form a vital and exciting part of the students' experience. We hope that through a study of art, our students will become people who are able to see potential, think outside the box, and use their creativity with confidence.
